What is a Dental Crown?

Dental crowns

A dental crown is a small cap made from a high-quality ceramic material that mimics the strength, shape, and appearance of natural tooth structure. Our team uses these devices to cover, protect, and rebuild teeth that have been severely damaged by injury, infection, or an intensive dental procedure such as a root canal. Almost anyone with a compromised tooth but otherwise good oral health can be an excellent candidate for a dental crown, and those who aren’t ready when they first have their consultation at our office may be able to become excellent candidates later after resolving tooth decay and gum disease with restorative treatments.

The Dental Crown Process

While many practices require at least two appointments to place a dental crown, the team at Unique Dental uses CEREC technology to place them in a single visit. After you are approved for the treatment, our dentist will administer a local anesthetic to ensure your comfort before reshaping the tooth to remove any decayed matter and make room for the crown. Our dentist will then carefully measure the treated tooth and input the data into our CEREC machine, which will delicately whittle down a ceramic block into a beautiful and functional crown while you wait. When the appliance is finished, our dentist will cement it in place, make any final adjustments, and send you on your way.

The Benefits of Getting a Dental Crown

Neglecting to restore compromised teeth can leave them vulnerable to further injury and infection and cause more serious oral health problems later. Rebuilding your tooth with a dental crown can deliver a number of impressive benefits such as:

  • Helping the patient to chew thoroughly and comfortably
  • Protecting the tooth so that it will not need extraction later
  • Addressing multiple dental health issues such as cracks, chips, fractures, and misshapenness in a single treatment
  • Each crown being customized to blend in seamlessly with the rest of the smile, making them indistinguishable from the rest of the teeth.

With excellent care and hygiene that includes daily brushing and flossing, regular checkups at our office, and mindful chewing habits, your crown can last for fifteen years or more.
