What Are CEREC Same-Day Dental Crowns?
A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap that we place over the entire top portion of a tooth (everything that is above the gumline). Its job is to restore the form, function, and strength of a damaged tooth. Here are a few examples of when a crown might be necessary:
- A tooth has undergone root canal therapy.
- A tooth is cracked, chipped, or has suffered extensive decay.
- A tooth his badly misshapen.
CEREC is an acronym that stands for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics. That sounds like a mouthful, but essentially, these crowns are special because, instead of being made in a dental laboratory, they are made right in a dentist’s office using CAD/CAM technology.
The Process of Getting a CEREC Same-Day Dental Crown
The CEREC process starts with preparing the tooth. Typically, this means we have to remove some of its enamel so it will fit well beneath its restoration. In other cases, we need to build the tooth up.
Once the tooth is ready, we use our CEREC digital impression scanner to create a three-dimensional digital model of it and the surrounding dentition. With the assistance of sophisticated software, we use that impression to design your crown. We send the design to our in-house ceramic milling unit, which then carves your crown out of dental-grade porcelain (a type of ceramic). After the crown is completed, we attach it to your tooth.
From start to finish, the process takes just a few hours and often requires just one appointment. In contrast, traditional crowns usually require two appointments spread out across a few weeks because they are made in a third-party dental lab.
Benefits of CEREC Crowns vs. Traditional Crowns
CEREC crowns offer some noteworthy benefits when compared to their traditional counterparts:
- No need for a temporary crown. Because the CEREC process is so fast, you may not have to wear an uncomfortable and unattractive temporary crown.
- Save time. Making only one trip to our office can help you reserve more time for yourself.
- Digital technology helps us to create beautiful crowns that feature a perfect fit.
- Unlike traditional metal crowns, ceramic restorations blend in with the natural dentition.
- CEREC crowns tend to be comparable in cost to traditional crowns.
